Australia - Classification: Malting barley evaluation update

The Grains Australia Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) convened recently to evaluate new entries and review ongoing assessments within the current Malting Barley Classification Program.   

There were no new varieties accredited from the 2025 assessments. For a full list of currently accredited varieties, click here. 

The following provides an update on varieties currently progressing through the program. 

Summary of results: 

Varieties undergoing Stage Two Evaluation 

  • Titan AX:Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2025. Stage Two evaluation will continue in 2026. 
  • AGT Spirit:Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2025. Stage Two evaluation will continue in 2026. 
  • Spinnaker: Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2025. Stage Two evaluation will continue in 2026. 

Varieties undergoing Stage One Evaluation 

  • AGT Bunyip IA (AGTB0530): Successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2026. 
  • RGT Atlantis: Successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2026. 
  • Rocket CL (IGB22023T): Successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials; however, suitable quantities of grain will not be available until 2027.  
  • Soldier CL (IGB22117T): Assessment has been delayed with an announcement expected late May. 

Varieties accepted into Classification Program 

  • AGTB0836: Submitted by Australian Grain Technologies (AGT), this is a Clearfield (imidazolinone tolerant) barley, potentially fits into the medium fermentability brewing style, broadly adapted but best suited to low-medium rainfall regions. 
  • IGB24053: Submitted by InterGrain, potentially fits into the high fermentability brewing style and is suited to low-medium rainfall regions. 

Pending final quality checks, sufficient grain parcels are available for both new varieties accepted into the accreditation program and will commence Stage One evaluation in 2026. Further details will be confirmed once the 2026 program is finalised.
