The impact of quality seed has the potential to extend way beyond the farm.
East-West Seed’s Plantsman 217 sweet corn is traveling from fields in Perak to homes, restaurants, supermarkets, and even the familiar ‘Corn in a Cup’ enjoyed by consumers in Malaysia.
The story is special, because one crop links farmers, processors, retailers and consumers.

Plantsman 217 was selected for its sweet taste, bright yellow color, uniformity, processing quality, and ability to perform under unpredictable weather conditions. Under normal conditions, growers can harvest about 11,000 cobs per acre, which increases to about 13,000 in the non-monsoon season. There can be four planting cycles a year. Corn Success Story. But for growers, numbers matter as much as consistency.
“It’s the eating quality and the stability of the crop that makes us confident. “When we know what kind of yield and quality we can get, it’s easier to plan ahead and respond to market demand,” said one grower involved with the program.
That kind of reliability is crucial because the sweet corn market is expanding in different directions. Fresh produce is moving into markets and hypermarkets, and processed maize is used in frozen kernels and cobs, salads, juices, grilled dishes, and food-service applications. A success story for maize. The story also shows how different functions come together behind a successful product.
According to the East-West Seed Malaysia team, “It’s easy to see a packet of seed as a product, but behind it are farmers, colleagues, customers, and a lot of small decisions that help the crop get to market successfully. It’s something the whole team can be proud to see Plantsman 217 become part of everyday food choices.”

East-West Seed’s role goes beyond providing seed. The team works with growers through continuous crop cycles, advises them on technical issues during difficult weather conditions, and helps them understand how different varieties need to be managed to meet different market requirements.
GC Shivakumar, Regional Head – India & Growth Markets, East-West Seed, sees this as a great example of what the Growth Markets business is all about.
“We have to know what the farmers need, but also where the market is going. True innovation is meaningful when the right variety delivers consistency for growers and creates opportunities across fresh, processed and food-service markets.”
The journey from a Perak field to the cup of sweet corn in a consumer’s hand may seem simple. But in the background there is a chain of trust, quality and partnership – and a reminder that a good seed creates value at each step.
