An increasing array of new
varieties has overcome some of the constraints to the expansion
of pulse production in the Central West region of New South
Wales, and will assist growers with the adoption of pulses as a
valuable part of their cropping rotation.
Leigh Jenkins, agronomist at the
New South Wales Department
of Primary Industries in Warren, told a Grains Research
Update for growers at Gulargambone pulse adoption has been
limited to some extent by the adaptability of pulse crops in
general, and the availability of suitable varieties within each
pulse type, to the constraints imposed by the extremes of
environment, disease and soil type in this region.
Some of the new chickpea and faba
bean varieties available in 2006 were more suited to the Central
West of New South Wales than others but pulse production could
be made much more reliable and profitable by fitting each pulse
crop into the right situation.
