Assistant Breeder, Pepper and Tomato

Location: Zapotitan, El Salvador

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Breeder will coordinate breeding activities in the area such as planning, organizing, planting and following breeding screening trials; planning, organizing and supervising breeding crossings; collecting, compiling, organizing and interpreting information generated from breeding trials (with the ultimate goal of selecting varieties capable of satisfying the needs of the growers/processors); and others.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A proven track record in managing trials/screens for a vegetable seed company. (preferable in pepper and tomato industry).
  • Experience in supervising crossings at the breeding level.
  • Ability to travel extensively, mostly in El Salvador and to a lesser extent in Central America (there could also be at least 1 trip a year overseas).
  • Strong communication, organizational, coordinating and analytical skills.
  • Ability to perform without close supervision but under a team-effort environment (a self-starter, “hands-on” type of person).
  • An entrepreneurial attitude and flexibility.
  • Strong agronomic knowledge in vegetable production (preferably in tomato and pepper)
  • University degree in Agriculture, Plant Breeding or related field.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work in the office, laboratory, fields, greenhouse; along with variable climate conditions (hot, cold, etc.)
  • Intermediate user of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. multiple times throughout the course of a day.
  • Ability to communicate effectivelly in English
  • Ability to travel in Central America and oversees
  • The candidate must be located in El Salvador
