Canada’s high-quality science-based seed regulatory process maintained

Canada
February 10, 2011

The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) commented today on Parliament’s decision to strike down Bill C-474, a Private Members Bill sponsored by Alex Atamanenko, Member of Parliament for B.C. Southern Interior.

"Parliamentarians made the right decision on C-474," said CCC president JoAnne Buth. "On behalf of the Canadian canola sector, we thank these parliamentarians who listened to the concerns of the entire canola industry and rejected this legislation."

Bill C-474 would have introduced non-science based criteria to the seed approval process, interfering with a key principle of Canada’s regulatory system. "We thank the Parliamentarians who made the right decision and voted to defeat Bill C-474," Buth said.
