Nuseed, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nufarm Limited, announced today it has purchased the sunflower germplasm assets of Serbian-based company Super Seeds.
Super Seeds is involved in the breeding of elite oil and confection sunflower hybrids. The asset purchase, by Nuseed Serbia was completed last week. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Nuseed’s General Manager, Brent Zacharias, said the acquisition is a key strategic step for the company’s entry into the substantial European sunflower market.
“The addition of Super Seeds’ assets and people provides our expanding business with adapted products that already exhibit the disease, quality and herbicide tolerant traits necessary to compete in the large European market,” he said.
“Nuseed will immediately move into broad product development and commercial activities with a highly competitive pipeline that screens over 1000 new Eastern European test hybrids per year.”
Super Seeds’ proprietary germplasm was developed by Professor Dragan Skoric who has a rich history as one of the world’s most successful sunflower plant breeders. Professor Skoric will continue to work with Nuseed on the development program.
Mr Zacharias said the assets of Super Seeds will also complement existing Nuseed sunflower breeding and testing capabilities in Australia, Argentina, the USA and China.
Nuseed is a global seed and traits company focused on the enhancement of food and feed value through seed technology. The company develops proprietary canola, sunflower, and sorghum products that are marketed in over 25 countries.
