Bayer CropScience plans to establish a new breeding center in the Wimmera region, near Horsham (Victoria, Australia), focused on wheat and oilseeds. The company plans to invest around EUR 12 million (AUD 14 million) for the new station in Western Victoria. The target is the development of new varieties with higher yields and productivity improvements tailored to Australian conditions. Bayer’s breeding activities for wheat and oilseeds in Australia will also be coordinated from the new center. A long term rental agreement for land on which to build the laboratory and glasshouse facilities have been agreed with Longerenong College and Workco Ltd. Up to 20 full-time employees will work at the center in the future.
"With the demand for wheat and oilseeds growing worldwide, we drive our efforts towards producing new high-yielding varieties that are better able to withstand pests, diseases and able to thrive under environmental stresses like drought," said Dr. Mathias Kremer, Head of the BioScience business unit at Bayer CropScience. "We are convinced we can help make wheat and oilseeds farmers in Australia and beyond more productive and sustainable and thus contribute towards feeding this hungry planet." Australia is one of the largest exporters of agricultural products and ranks as the 3rd largest exporter for wheat and the 2nd largest for oilseeds.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development in Victoria, Peter Ryan, announced that the Coalition Government would provide AUD 1.2 million to upgrade road access to the facility. The provision of safe all-weather access to the Longerenong site will consolidate the partnership between Bayer CropScience, Longerenong College, the Victorian Government and Horsham Rural City, which contributed AUD 100,000 to the project.
Construction of the new breeding center will commence in the coming months with first local breeding programs expected to yield results for Australian farmers within the decade.
Global network of breeding stations to develop solutions adapted to local needs
The new breeding station contributes to Bayer CropScience's global network of wheat and oilseeds breeding stations situated in the heart of key markets through North America and Europe, with further expansion especially for wheat planned in Asia and Latin America in the medium term.

Stärkung der globalen Zuchtkompetenz: Bayer CropScience plant Investition von 12 Millionen Euro in australisches Zuchtzentrum für Weizen und Raps
Bayer CropScience plant ein neues Zuchtzentrum für Weizen und Raps im australischen Bundesstaat Victoria. In das neue Zentrum in der Region Wimmera nahe der Stadt Horsham sollen nach gegenwärtiger Planung rund 12 Millionen Euro investiert werden. Das Ziel sind neue Sorten mit höherem Ertrag und besserer Produktivität, die auf die Bedindungen in Australien zugeschnitten sind. Zudem sollen die Züchtungsaktivitäten von Bayer CropScience für Weizen und Raps in Australien vom neuen Zentrum aus koordiniert werden. Mit dem Longerenong College und der Workco Ltd. wurde ein langfristiger Pachtvertrag für ein Grundstück geschlossen, auf dem Labore und Gewächshäuser gebaut werden sollen. Bis zu 20 Mitarbeiter sollen in dem Zentrum arbeiten.
"Angesichts einer weltweit wachsenden Nachfrage nach Weizen und Raps verstärken wir unsere Anstrengungen, neue Sorten mit hohen Erträgen zu entwickeln, die Schädlingen und Krankheiten besser widerstehen und auch unter Umweltstress wie Trockenheit gedeihen", sagte Dr. Mathias Kremer, Leiter des Geschäftsbereichs BioScience bei Bayer CropScience. "Wir sind überzeugt, dass wir dazu beitragen können, den Weizen- und Rapsanbau in Australien und weltweit produktiver und nachhaltiger zu machen." Australien gehört zu den größten Exporteuren von Agrargütern in der Welt und liegt beim Export von Weizen auf Platz 3 und bei Raps auf Platz 2.
Die Regierung des Bundesstaats Victoria kündigte an, rund 1 Million Euro in die Zugangsstraßen zu der Einrichtung zu investieren, und die Stadt Horsham hat knapp 100.000 Euro zu dem Projekt beigetragen. Der Bau des Zuchtzentrums wird in den nächsten Monaten beginnen. Die ersten lokalen Zuchtprogramme sollten bis Ende dieses Jahrzehnts Ergebnisse für die Landwirte in Australien liefern.
Weltweites Netzwerk von Zuchstationen für lokale Bedürfnisse
Die neue Zuchtstation ergänzt das globale Netz von Weizen- und Raps-Zuchtstationen, die Bayer CropScience in Schlüsselmärkten in Nordamerika und Europa betreibt. Mittelfristig ist ein weiterer Ausbau insbesondere der Weizen-Zuchtstationen in Asien und Lateinamerika geplant.
Neben der Ausweitung seiner Zuchtkompetenz baut Bayer CropScience ein Netzwerk mit international führenden Forschungseinrichtungen auf, so mit CSIRO in Australien und Evogene in Israel.
