At the heart of DSV is forage:
Over 90 years ago, DSV started breeding grass and forage species, with the aim of improving the performance of animals. Since then, progress has been swift, and in the last few years, with the advent of the anaerobic digester (AD), a new solution to forage productivity has been designed and tested in the UK.The AD forage sector brings new challenges and opportunities to the UK. Firstly, how to optimise dry matter yields in arable rotations, while managing work load and enhancing black grass control. Secondly, how to double crop land while preserving soil fertility and structure.
DSV are able to offer a full range of crop options to address these opportunities:-
- Maize- Movanna
- Grasses – specialist mixtures for maximum AD performance
- Forage Rye- Bonfire - the double cropping option
- Energy So(i)lutions - arable silage mixtures- giving dry matter, gas, soil structure and fertility improvements
- Wheat- Olympus - perfect for whole crop.
Bringing these into focus for spring 2016, Maize drilling has been delayed due to cold ground temperature and high rainfall but with its excellent spring vigour Movanna will overcome these issues. Early sowings (mostly under plastic) have begun!
At Wardington (DSV UK’s breeding station) the first cut of silage is about to be taken on the Italian Ryegrass and the forage rye trial to simulate an entry into maize.
In Wiltshire, at Stowell Farms, last year’s under sown Italian ryegrass (from the Energy So(i)lution Vetch/Rye Plus mix) is about to be harvested. This year’s strip trial featuring the mixture Hybrid Vetch/Rye is pressing on and building biomass.
Showing the flexibility of the Energy So(i)lutions range, the OSR drilled at Flawborough Farms in Nottinghamshire behind the vetch/rye mix is showing great vigour due to higher soil nitrogen. Moving forward to the next newsletter we will bring you trials updates and results as available.
